I've been using Gnome3 for a while and I can say the lack of minimize/maximize buttons is absolutely OK. You can drag the window to the top of the screen or double click on its bar to maximize it and there is no need to minimize as you can just use multiple desktops (I've binded CTRL+ALT+1,2,3,4... to move windows between desktops and ALT+1,2,3,4... to switch between desktops). Another interesting thing is using ALT+Tab to switch between apps and ALT+~ to switch between multiple windows of the same app.

Pressing ALT+1 brings you to the activities view, where all of the open windows are available for you to choose from, and ALT+2 brings you a quick prompt to launch simple commands (although I always bind ALT+T to open a terminal).

Briefly, very nice workflow, easy to use, visually nice and smooth and you can do pretty much everything without moving your hands from the keyboard to use the mouse which is a big big plus for me.

Thanks. I suppose I rarely use minimize/maximize on OS X since I run applications in different workspaces anyway, but would be nice if it were there per ancient fundamentals of any OS anyone has ever used since 1981. But again, there isn't really anywhere for the applications minimize to if you do enable the buttons anyway... It's not good or bad, it's just an interesting design.

Good review! I really like the integrated chat and search features the best. Gnome has always tried to be minimalistic and simplify the desktop experience. This may explain the lack of min/maximize buttons. I still can't decide if I really need those buttons, or if I'm just having a hard time letting them go. Also, you can put quick-launch apps in the left sidebar by drag-drop.

Thanks for the comment. I've been looking in to this for a while but seems like there isn't any way to do this so far. I've gone out to a few other forums and asked people to post here if they find something that works.

On this site: http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2008/04/13161/

I found a freeware program for OS X called Network Beacon which forwards Bonjour traffic into a
VPN connection. The instructions on that site describe how to forward iTunes, but I think Home Sharing must use different settings for sharing because my Mac Mini's iTunes now shows up twice on my home network (once via Home Sharing and once via Network Beacon). And, I have yet to get it to work via VPN. Perhaps someone else could put these pieces together.

Thanks for sharing your progress, I'm glad someone has given it a try. Hopefully there is a better solution out there somewhere, because being able to stream locally doesn't add as much value as advertised. Might as well just turn the volume up instead :)

I have a LinkSys N router running dd-wrt with PPTP VPN server running. The first roadblock that I encountered attempting to do Home Sharing over VPN is that the PPTP client for iOS 4.3 is quite unstable. It only connects about 5% of the time. I never had a problem with 4.2.1.

Once it does connect, I have had no luck getting the home sharing to work. Home sharing relies on the Bonjour protocol. Bonjour does not work well over VPN connections because VPN does not support multicast DNS to allow the devices to work.

I also tried the same connection (PPTP VPN) with my MacBook Pro to see if I could see the library on my media computer. I was not. I was also able to do some traceroutes. The traceroute takes an extra hop due to the VPN, and I think that this may be where the roadblock is. I was reading a forum that it may be possible to JB and make it work, but that is above my level of expertise at this point.
